Coming Up: Anita Shreve…and Spoken Word Revolution Redux
April 17th, 2007
NOTE: Our home station WMUA 91.1 is preempting the April 20 show to broadcast a UMASS sports event. However, the show will be podcasted on this site on Monday April 22 and on Valley Free Radio and our other broadcast stations at the usual airtimes. Here’s the line-up:
Anita Shreve talks about her new novel, BODY-SURFING. Also, to celebrate April Poetry Month, we talk with Mark Eleveld about SPOKEN WORD REVOLUTION REDUX, a book-and-CD collection of verse from many poets, in the oral tradition.
Listen/download the show after 9AM EST April 22, right here on www.writersvoice.net. Or, listen live on Valley Free Radio on Thursday April 26 at 8 pm. See sidebar for links to other stations broadcasting the show and info about showtimes.
Anita Shreve has won the O’Henry prize , the PEN/L.L. Winship Award and the New England Book Award. Not bad for someone who felt teaching high school and working as a journalist would be better ways to make a living. She has written twelve novels, as well as many published pieces of non-fiction. Shreve has said that the spark of a novel is the collision of ideas in the author’s mind and once alight the characters move the book along its course. The author likes to build suspense, leaving clues along the shore on the way to the final denoument. Her latest novel, BODY SURFING, uncovers the pull and tug of family jealousies and long-held tensions that underlie human frailty. The novel plays itself out in the same kind of setting–the New Hampshire shore–that held three of her other works: THE PILOT’S WIFE, 1998; FORTUNE ROCKS, 1999; and SEA GLASS, 2002. Why does this area continue to hold Anita Shreve’s attention through four novels? Find out when you tune into our interview with her. (Thanks to Michael Pollitt, the newest member of the Writer’s Voice team, for these show notes.)
And the first of two segments for Poetry Month: SPOKEN WORD REVOLUTION REDUX. It’s an eclectic assortment of poetry aloud, with poetry and essays by Ted Kooser, Mark Strand, Billy Collins, Patricia Smith, Regie Gibson, Roger Bonair-Agard, Viggo Mortensen and Hank Mortensen and others. We talk with editor Mark Eleveld and hear some cuts off the accompanying CD.
