This Week: Ann Jones, KABUL IN WINTER & Michael Levine, THE FINE PRINT OF SELF-PUBLISHING
February 16th, 2007
We talk with Ann Jones, author of KABUL IN WINTER: Life Without Peace in Afghanistan. Also, Mark Levine tells us about THE FINE PRINT OF SELF-PUBLISHING, and you can call in to 545-3691 during our interview to ask him your questions.
When the US and its coalition forces bombed Afghanistan and sent the Taliban packing, even many folks who disagreed with the US policy thought that, at least, Afghanistan’s women might be freed. But is the country or its women any better for US involvement? Soon after the bombing ceased, award-winning journalist and women’s rights activist Ann Jones set out for Kabul. Working with war widows, retraining English teachers, and investigating the city’s prison for women, Jones entered a community of female outcasts: runaway child brides, pariah prostitutes, cast-off wives, victims of rape. KABUL IN WINTER chronicles her sojourn. Writer’s Voice first aired this interview with Jones last year. Her book is being re-issued in paperback in early March.
And, for authors who want to self-publish: how do you find a company to print your book and help guide you through the process–without cheating you? Author and former intellectual property lawyer Mark Levine analyzes and critiques the contracts and services of 48 self-publishing companies. He tells us what to look for and what to look out for.
